Mel Gibson to Accept Plea Deal in Domestic Violence Case

Mel Gibson, charged with corporal injury on a spouse (a crime of domestic violence), will plead no contest to simple battery tomorrow, according to reports. Mr. Gibson allegedly decided that a long court battle would strain his relationship with his children. The deal reportedly involves counseling but no jail time.

Domestic Violence is a very serious crime in Florida. Florida Statute 741.28 defines domestic violence as “any assault, aggravated assault, battery, aggravated battery, sexual assault, sexual battery, stalking, aggravated stalking, kidnapping, false imprisonment, or any criminal offense resulting in physical injury or death of one family or household member by another family or household member.” These charges are very serious and can have a variety of consequences on your legal rights, including jail time and the filing of a domestic violence injunction. If you violate the domestic violence injunction once, you could face up to six months in jail. Subsequent violations could even land you in state prison.
