31 men were arrested and charged with sex crimes in a sting set up by the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office, Sarasota Police, Venice Police, North Port Police, state prosecutors, the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office, U.S. Homeland Security and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. The task-force was created to catch would-be predators who wanted to travel to meet a minor for sex.
Undercover detectives, posing online as girls and boys of varying ages, say they conversed with the defendants, who thought they had coaxed the actual childrena and teens into having sex. During the six-day sting that ended Saturday, men came from virtually every corner of Sarasota County and from across Southwest Florida to meet their intended victims at a residence where detectives awaited them.
The suspects, ranging in age from 22 to 62, came from all walks of life.
