Judge Sentences Drunk Drivers to Write Essays

A Seminole County Judge has come up with a new way to punish drunk drivers. After seeing hundreds and hundreds of DUI cases, Judge Carmine Bravo has decided to make those convicted of DUI write a 500 word essay about a person who died in a highway crash. In an interview with the Orlando Sentinel, Judge Bravo said:

“Sentencing should include something punitive, educational and remedial if possible. Many don’t realize how irresponsible they can be on the road. It takes focus, care and maturity to drive.”

This sentence may encourage drivers to think twice and prevent future drunk driving arrests. In Tampa, first time DUI has fairly standard sanctions, which do not include essay writing. If you are about to be sentenced for a first time DUI in Tampa, the minimums include 12 months of probation, a $500 fine plus court costs, 50 community service hours, 10 days vehicle impound, a 6 month driver license suspension, and DUI school.
