Paternity

A paternity proceeding is a legal action to determine whether a man is the father of a child, and to confer the rights and duties associated with that child to the respective parents. While the primary purpose of the proceeding is to require the father to provide support for his child, the issue of custody may also be addressed. A paternity proceeding may be brought by any woman, married or unmarried, who is pregnant or who has given birth, by the state if the mother has received public assistance for the child, by a child, or by any man who has reason to believe that he is the father of a child. An action to determine paternity must be brought before four years after the child reaches the age of majority (age 22), except in a probate case for the purpose of inheritance.
