Mediation is one of a variety of procedures known as alternative dispute resolution that is designed to produce results in the mutual interests of both parties. Mediation is appropriate only when all of the parties are willing and able to assume the responsibility of negotiating, making tradeoffs, and accepting the results. It is an informal, non adversarial process in which decisions are made by the parties, not by the mediator. Family mediation may take several sessions because of the numerous issues involved such as support, equitable distribution, visitation and custody and because of the emotional nature of those issues. The goal is to facilitate continuing communication in an ongoing relationship between the parties, thereby reducing the post-judgment conflict. Our attorneys ensure that the necessary time and attention is spent allowing the parties to fully air their concerns and views to assure that our clients are satisfied with the outcome of the mediation.
